Trauma Informed Lawyering: Working with survivors of DV/SA/HT

This program will introduce attorneys to trauma-informed approaches for working effectively with survivors of domestic violence (DV), sexual assault (SA), and human trafficking (HT). Participants will learn how trauma can affect communication, decision-making, memory, and engagement with the legal system, and how attorneys can incorporate trauma-informed practices into client interactions while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries. The program will also address strategies for creating a supportive, client-centered legal environment and navigating common challenges that may arise when representing survivors.

Cassie Gazipura

Cassie Gazipura is a Santa Cruz attorney with experience in survivor-centered legal advocacy, criminal defense, post-conviction relief, and criminal legal system reform. For five years, she served as a Staff Attorney at Monarch Services, where she led the legal program serving survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. Cassie previously served as a Deputy Public Defender in Santa Cruz County, where she founded and managed the office’s Clean Slate Program. She has also worked on statewide resentencing and reentry initiatives and taught a record-clearance clinic through Monterey College of Law. She currently serves as Director of Social Impact and Strategic Initiatives at Mayeda Consulting, working at the intersection of behavioral health, the criminal legal system, and organizational change.

MCLE credits: The Santa Cruz County Bar Association has certified that this activity has been approved by the State Bar of California for one hour of MCLE credit.
